We saw more elephants today and many baby elephants. We rode a mummy elephant and the 2 year old girl followed us. She loved to play in the river and would lay side ways and try to flow with the current under the water. Then we rode an ox cart and went bamboo rafting. Very tiring.
Tonight will be a cultural show and tomorrow back on train to Bangkok for overnight.
Everyone will be glad to head towards home. Grandpa we tried a few times to ring unsuccessfully.

Great day for all
We went to the city area for breakfast and were there too early, and also too early for the public toilet.
we all had some hot chocolate/muffin.
The hotel had a monkey show brochure so we asked a mini bus driver to take us there.. which was well out of town and near many other attractions. So first it was another elephant place.. and don't ask how many 20 baht bunches of bananas and sugar cane mummy bought for the girls.. and Lotus kept saying more, more more,... ladies who were selling her were on to her and laughing.
Many tourist buses turned up in the end. so many elephants it was great. and this is the show where they kick the big soccer ball around. the paintings at this place started at 1,000 baht,, that is the elephant paintings and they wanted 800 baht for riding the elephant which actually might have been Ok given they took you down a creek etc and these were also well trained elephants.
Mummy gave a mamout a tip and the elephant put his hat on my heat and then knocked my head with his trunk.. very funny. charlotte was too scared for that.
Then we visited a minority group/housing area where they have different minorities living in traditional houses.. big tourist buses would not fit down the road for that one. It was great. We bought quite a number of over priced things from traditional ladies and also gave 3 old ladies with red teeth 100 baht for the sake of it... that really put a smile on their faces... and more red teeth flashing.
At the end we saw some Karen people - the ones with long necks and big brass like necklesses to stretch their necks. Some seemed sad but other OK. Last lady had crossed eyes very badly but was the most friendly and asked where we were from. didn't have much change but bought Niamh a bracelet from her.. wish I could find a way for some western doc flying through to give her the eye surgery she needs.. very bad crossed eyes.
Then we did a butterfly place (like 1 butterfly in the caged area) but with pretty orchids.
Then we went to a monkey show place with lots of monkeys that were trained, but 2 did a show. very funny riding bike etc. Then we went to tiger place but with youn
g children they would only let you see the baby ones and it was over 1000 baht... and sign that you wouldn't sue them for injury etc etc. that was too expensive given we had been so close to oodles of tigers in CHina before getting Lotus and not at that cost - so now back at hotel, with visit to pharmacy just done.
All in all great fun - wonder what we can come up with for tomorrow.

Chiang Mai
OUr hotel last night was very old and desperately needed updating. they had built 2 more hotels next to it and had interlocking walkways on 4th floor. On ground of one of the buildings had a shopping centre. Getting out of our area was like trying to find your way out of a rabbit warren - would never recommend that hotel to anyone - service poor too.
Lotus was worried because dark room (old wood style).
chiang Mai is not the tranquil quiet hangout place it used to be - actually the tourists have probably wrecked it.. if you want to relax I think it may need to be a good distance out of town, which with the children does not suit.
The food is a real issue - we may give in and do starbucks for breakfast just because we all feel ill after eating the spicy food and or with palm oil in it. Invariably the girls like french fried (OK thai way of spelling it) and they are always cooked in palm oil which really sits badly in your tummy.
I would kill for a plain apple and plain veggies right now but just have to get by with what we can. The only thing Lotus could eat at hotel breakfast this morning was watermelon which of course she got allover her clean clothes and needed changing.
Got to tell you mjore about monkeys while I can. On way out of Lopburi a monkey was sitting on top of public telephone box trying to get into an orange drink. they jump down and casually walk down the footpath- shop owners need to be careful to keep guard so they don't steal food and run.
People at gate of temple had a sling shot and big bamboo stick no doubt if monkeys get something they ar enot meant to. everyone kept warning us about the monkeys stealing things including glasses.
Today we went to chiang Mai zoo and also a private Insect Museum at a guys house (tilda would have LOVED IT). Man at museum very annoyed that the Lonely Planet did not include his museum int he 2010 guidebook.
Zoo on side of mountain and we walked it all and think we were almost the only ones who did. Most thais just pay for the shuttle bus service and take the monorail or don't go far. It was ery crowded to see the pandas so we passed on that... charlotte is very focused on saving money as I told her I might consider a DSi in bangkok if we don't spend too much.
charlotte has been wonderful at walking huge distances.. actually both girls are coping really well with the backwaters we have done. OUr new hotel is much brighter right alongside railway line and much more set up for foreigners.
Lotus has improved language a lot including 'charlotte' in an upset way like mummy says at times. Her motor skills have come a long way getting in and out of tuk tuks and mini buses too.
The transport guys here are much more accustomed to westerners paying whatever price they ask.. many a time we have walked away from a driver saying 60 baht was their minimum when I would only go 40 or 50 baht.. I know that is still a great price as others will drive you much greater distance for 40 baht.
the night market area is no longer in just one building but sprawled.. it really is overbearing and gets to be too much.
Lotus is smiling again normal today and when she is happy she gets a LOT of attention from the Thais including men.
Not sure what we iwll do tomorrow. charlotte wants to swim, we might need to visit Pharmacy for some Lomotil or similar. It would be nice to visit the people with big necks - the gold rings that stretch their necks longer, but am not keen for a 12 hour trip couped up in some bus fo rthe girls.

Chiang Mai
Our hotel has great views of the distant mountains but only 1 night there before moving to cheaper option near station.
At the night bazar with all the fake things for sale and copies of DVDs etc. Not much interest to me but Charlotte is getting a bit of shopping done here.
Lotus managed a smile after some McDonald chips so that is good - so long as they stay down. She did a lot of sleeping today.. will be glad when we go back home to revert back to strollers, car seats etc and seperatre beds initially so she does not seem to be on me 24/7.
Anyway Charlotte now internets away while mummy types away.. currently Youtubing HSM.

Xmas in Lampang
Xmas eve nearly the whole town stopped and went 'out' to the town square where a clock tower is or at another area with market type stalls etc.
Given the girls had been sick I looked up the lonely planet and we went to best place to eat. Charlotte kept saying she was sick and we couldn't find ANY transport back and area around clock tower had traffic diverted.
So many motorbikes parked next to each other. Pretty lights, music, many children dressed up. Very much a community spirit and not what was expected.
If we were back home it would be time for the big Xmas lunch. Don't think any of us could stomach that today, oh well but would love the company.
We are taking the train to Chiang Mai which is slower than bus options but safer. We got bus to elephant converstation centre. Very well set up and nto a rip off for foreigners. Elephants really well trained and they did a show. Plenty of you will get postcards when I can find some stamps from a postoffice. They often only have stamps for within Thailand. Expect Chiang Mai to be much better set up for foreigners in that respect.
Charlotte gets spoken to often in Thai asking if she speaks Thai. I suppose there is some resemblance to Northern Thai people but she certainly looks similar to province in China to Manchu.
Lotus been sick number of times but now keeping water / toast down fingers crossed.
Merry Xmas to everyone.

Lotus sick and elephants
Lotus has been sick today but otheriwse OK. Today we are going to find some elephants.
Going to bus station to do it cheaper. Funny hearing Xmas songs in shops here so different to home.
Wishing everyone a great Xmas. Grandpa we will try to call you.

Lampang and train
We did a 8.5 hour train ride north.. much cooler and darker earlier. Many rice paddies and for over 100kms before here there was jungle areas - nice to see unlike in China.
Lotus one morning when we stayed in Ayuthya kept a mouthful of scrambled egg in her mouth while she leaned over the fish pond and and of course spat it out.. how embarrassing in a nice resort style accommodation all beautiful.. but the fish seemed to eat some.
We did about a 20 minute pony ride with cart tonight right outside hotel. Lotus and Charlotte both very excited about it.. later 3 lined up so no doubt there will be another ride tomorrow.
It seems so long ago we were home and we will all be glad to make it home again to familiarity.
In Lopburi the hotel offered taxi to train station for 300baht.. but smart girls got 2 mini-buses for 30 baht with a 14 baht tip included for large case/assistance.
We saw the temples in Ayuthya at night time with a nice lady. Learnt that tuk tuks with flashing shiny coat of paint/look nice charge more - go for the more derelict ones (not those that have pranged) with pics of family in back for much more reasonable rate. Worked out local rate using tuk tuk and stuck to my guns.
We are getting by very cheaply lately which is great. Cathie/Michael you can visit your sister in laws family in Thailand very cheap with her assistance using local transport/food options rather than tourist overprices.
The elephant rides in tourist spots are like 400-500 baht per person ($16-$18) and 200 baht for Charlotte, but Dreamworld was confirmed as cheapest at just 50 baht so we were lucky.
Lotus very noisy on train, actually she seems to get noiser each day and we sat near a NZ family with 3 boys who revved girls up. Many westerners on air-con 2nd class train today heading to Chiang Mai. It was a nice relief to have the coolness and other westerners so you could trust your purse a bit more.
Will try to find elephants tomorrow here somewhere - too tired for now. We have another night here tomorrow and then Xmas day move to Chiang Mai probably by train.

Ayuthuya
Wemade it onthe air con train which wasmuchmore expensive. Then got a tuktuk driver who took us to our hotel and offered to take us to varioustemples.
Sorry bad keyboard and we nappy soin a hurry here.
Temples OK butCharlotte just wanted the pool instead...mmmI remember the days where I could linger at such places... sometimes youwonder if you arenuts tobring twokids in tow toThailand butthe girls are having a ball.
We went for a swim and thenlong walk near train station and 3 baht boateach across the river to a verynice eatery right up high overlooking the busy river here.. manytourists infast boats going up to river to see templesatnight time.
One temple had alot oflights so probably something on butthey seemto want to rip you off here sonot so keen..need tokeep moretolocalprices.
Better get home as baby carrier wet and pantsgetting wetter...

Childrens Discovery Centre & Siam Ocean World
Chatachuk market was just setting up when we got there and stinky hot.. the clothes are too small and not our style and saw lots of puppies but not the strange things... it is so huge Charlotte complaining of sore feet. So we went next door to Childrens Museum where girls had fun.
Then got taxi long way to Siam Ocean World at bottom of Shopping Centre in city. Very pristine Xmas decorations outside modern shopping malls mainly focused on snow things as opposed to Santa back home.
We caught the bus back near hotel.. the Thai people are so nice when you have children in tow. They always offer a good seat on the bus for allof us. Wouldn't happen back home the way it does here.
Yesterday Khao San Rd so quiet. Today it is amazing tourists everywhere fresh off the plane. Many not used to traffic and watching out for taxis, tuk tuks etc and some \show off bare skin on shoulders/back way too much for Thai style.
Anyway girls pooped tonight. We had another go a Swensons ice cream after our $2 pad thai dinner. Off to Ayuthua tomorrow on the 8.30am train... girls waking around 5.45am so we usuaully have time for internet before breakfast.

Elephants again
Forgot to add we fed elephants again yesterday and could have ridden them too,, but passed on it. Some of them are tied up really on a very short chain and they get excited moving back and forth almost along thelines of the children in the SWI rocking back and forth.. don't really want to support that.
The early mornings are nice here and later when sun goes down for Charlotte to swim.. btw she wants to bring the hotel swimming pool back home.

Buildings and crocodiles
We made it to the Ancient City place using local buses mainly.
The buildings were good. It was very spread out and we had to walk because Charlotte could not ride a bike. In the end it got really hot. Actually it is so hot you don't usually need a toilet break while out.
We got into a cab at the gate to head back to the longer distance bus and the man said crocodile farm. I knew of it on the map and we agreed. Charlotte & Lotus fed a hippo, Charlotte threw some chicken to crocs - mass of them. Not very nice for many of the animals there. Chimps, monkeys etc etc that people could feed anything... all the cages bare concrete no green.. the monkeys in our zoo back home are in paradise in comparison.
Lotus squeals with delight so often e.g. when we went in floating market boat and driver zoomed along, when she knew we were going to crocodile farm, when we go back to hotel, etc etc... and she says 'hello' loudly back to those street vendors who try to say hello to get your attention and then they laugh... she also has the hotel staff worked out with peek a boo etc at the front reception.
We got haircuts for about $13.
Tomorrow is only Chatachuk market and Chldrens Discovery Centre. The train north is early Sunday.. and we now know the route to get to the airport via the cheap train/taxi to station.
Charlotte is learning the respect the Thais have for their king and for temples - no harm done there. They are a very humble people in general. One taxi driver the other night thought I must have had Asian boyfriends and seemed to keep looking in mirror and putting English love song on radio etc... needless to say I looked out the window.
We are at acompromise so I can type - one banana shake for the girls while mummy types... in a cafe mummy visited in Khao San Rd in my backpacker days gone by!!

6 baht train
we went to Dream World using 2 taxis and a 6 baht train each (abot 25 cents). Grandpa would be imprssed.
WE saw fairy
tale land etc and love garden. Missed many rides as Lotus too small and didn't want scary ones. NOthing on Disney although sections ok.
WE rode elephants for like $2 each and to feed them bananas only 20 baht - less than a dollar.
Got pooped in end. Problem with taxi drivers is when Lotus throws wobbly they drive faster. Train safer in that respect. Only one lady tried to pick pocket on cheap train but on to it.
Vry friendly people otherwise.
Today we might do ancient world (not sure how far out). these places seems to be quite a fair way out of Bangkok and maybe zoo but who knows - see how we go.
Baby carrier great.
There is a Swensons ice cream place near hotel - very flash ice cream even in Xmas designs.

Dream World today
Typing at these squeezy internet cafes with Lotus trying to throw tantrums is not easy..
Anyway life here is so different. No room for strollers so glad about that decision.
And money here seems to go an awful lot further than in China which is good although our exchange rate is fantastic.
We will try Dream world today and if time permits somewhere do the Grand Palace and China town etc.
So many things to see no way in time we have to cover much.
THe Siram Niramit show was nothing short of one of the most spectacular shows we have ever seen. Two elephants stared and it covered the historical past of Thailand. Around 150 performers and huge cultural type centre with about 2000 seats but not so many tourists. Highly recommnend it to anyone. Fed an elephant - girls tired/scared... he took 2 cucumbers at once out of my hand with trunk. Hope to do more of this up north.
Might do the zoo tomorrow. Sat will be Chatachuk market and Childrens Discovery Museum. HAve not bought hardly anything.

Snake Farm and FLoating Market
The floating market was over 100km from Bangkok and we took the local bus. Have to really bargain hard with non-green/yellow taxis re using metre. Man at Southern bus shelter had been hit and killed =- no pics and tried not to dwell onit for Charlotte.
We saw a snake show vry wild.
Off to a cultural show tonight.
